Here are a few Youth Football Offensive Formations I have seen over the last 30 youth football seasons, in the DFW and Colorado youth football regions. Well, I listed 20 formations so what are the most popular youth formations in your pee wee football region? Leave me a comment below, I would love to hear your feedback, especially what is your top formation that you run almost every season.

Of course I am partial to the Beast Offense, Power I, Notre Dame Box, Single Wing, Wildcat, Triple Wing Spread, Off-set I and the Double Wing Spin formations. These offensive formations are the main formations in my two youth football playbooks, the Power Wing Beast Offense and the Wildcat Multi Spread Offense.

Over the last several years in the DFW area, I have seen more Pistol, Diamond formations along with Wishbone. Yes, and many youth teams will run the Spread trying to emulate the local high schools and not succeeding the majority of the time. The I formation is always part of many youth football offenses as well as the Split backfield / Wing T variations. We do not see many Warner style Unbalanced Single Wing Offenses in our area.; more Beast and Notre Dame Box variations near us.

I am a defensive ball control minded coach, so my youth football offensive formations are usually power running formations which are great in youth football. I can control the tempo and game clock with power running formation so I can keep the opposing offense off the field and wear out their defense. Passing formations at young pee wee football ages are almost a waste of time until around age 11 unless you got lucky with a prodigy QB. I did one flag season with an 8 year old passer. I thought he was John Elway. Majority of time, running formations with misdirection thrown in will suffice for youth football players ages 5 to 12.

If you have your heart set on passing, I love formations that allow play action passing. I want my pass plays to look like my run plays most of the time. A quick pop pass to the backside TE is killer. We usually have an audible called “Popeye” which we use to call this play at the LOS when the defense is run heavy. I have faced a ton of youth football teams over the last 30 seasons and only a handful of team will consistently complete passes to win ball games. So be careful installing too many passes in your offensive formations for pee wee football.

There are a ton of great youth football offensive formations which you can see from the list above. I usually run two or three formations a season to give my offense some variety. I am usually running a short yardage formation and for me that is the Beast Offense. I will also have an Off-set I or Power I as my main offense then a Wildcat or a Double Wing Spin Offense I call Speed. Speed is similar to maybe a Flexbone. Of course these three formation are installed over the season and not in the first day.
