Game Simulation Walk Thru Drill

Spice up your boring walk thrus with the Game Simulation Walk Thru Drill and keep your youth football players engaged.  Everyone does walk thrus on the practice before the game. I was doing them the same old way up until 2007 when I decided to spice it up a bit.  Why not make the walk thrus just like game day with coin toss, special teams, penalties, sideline action, and scoring?  The kids loved it.  They were more interested in running walk thrus if there was a purpose.

I call this drill, Game Simulation Walk Thru Drill.  We basically simulate game day even setting up on the home or visitor sideline.  We chose our Captains which makes it easy for the actual game day because they stay the same.  We do a coin toss and either kick off or run a kick return and then go to either offense or defense for play simulations.  Missed assignments or alignments are penalties and perfect plays equal yardage and points.

Check out the video below for more on one my my favorite youth football drills; the Game Simulation Walk Thru Drill.

This drill is great for younger 5, 6, 7 and 8 year old teams to get used to game day, especially early in the season.  It also is great for coaches to work out the kinks.  Weve found wrist coach errors and blocking call issues along with hand signal problems running the Game Simulation Drill.

Greyhound Team Pursuit Defensive Youth Football Drill

Coaching Youth Football Playbooks, Tips and more pee football talkThis is a free youth football coaching video on the Greyhound Team Pursuit Drill; a pee wee football drill by Coach Parker. Great drill to condition your players and also teach them proper pursuit angles when chasing a running back down the sidelines.

Your young football players get tired of running wind sprints at the end of practice, plus they say not to end practice with sprints since pretty much everyone I know hates wind sprints.  No one wants to go home hating football practice.  To hide the fact I am running wind sprints we use the Greyhound Team Pursuit Defensive Drill to spice up our conditioning at then end of practice and teach a very important football concept; pursuit angles.

greyhound team pursuit defensive drill for pee wee football

Basically you set up a defense on the 20 yard line or so and have two runners or “rabbits” on each sideline that will act as the chase runners or “rabbits” running down the sideline for the pursuing defense.  A coach in the middle calls a cadence and snaps the ball to start the drill and will either throw the football left or right to one of the coaches standing by the sideline runners.  We want the defense to read the initial snap of the football and rush and then read the football flow to each side and then run the pursuit angle.  The defensive players do not tackle the “rabbit” but touch him as he runs down the sideline.  We are looking for defensive players to set up at the proper angles all the way down the sideline.

I hope you enjoy the drills.  Take a look at the video.

Pop Pass Drill – Youth Football Drills

The Pop Pass Youth Football Drill for Passing is one of my favorite football drills for younger players to learn how to catch and throw and most importantly work on your QB / Center exchanges.  Not only is the Pop Pass Drill, a great passing drill but it is also a great warm-up drill to start in pre-practice time and continue to open practices when you have players drifting in a little late due to traffic or work schedules. So if you have several late players like we do most practices this is a great drill to open with as players arrive and get their pads on.  Just make sure your QBs are not the late arrivals.  🙂

Pop Pass Youth Football Drill for Passing by Coach Parker

In the Pop Pass Drill two sets of players numbering 6 to 10 with a QB, Center, and Receivers are opposite each and offset about 15 to 10 yards. The receivers run routes toward the other station and switch lines to come back.  See chart above.

This is an excellent drill that works many pee wee football fundamentals. I highly recommend this drill for any little league tackle team.

Pop Pass Drill Fundamentals

  • Warm-Ups
  • QB / Center Exchange
  • Shotgun / Under Center Snaps
  • QB / Centers Rotation
  • Practice HB Option Passes
  • QB Vision over D/O-Line at LOS
  • Route Running
  • Throwing & Catching
  • Conditioning

The Pop Pass Youth Football Drill helps me get in my QB / Center exchange reps that always get put on the back burner. I try to get 25 to 50 routes run by the players in this drill so we can get those reps in for the Center and QB.

Running Back Gauntlet Drill- Youth Football Drills

The Running Back Gauntlet drill is one of my top youth football drills for teaching pee wee football players to hold on to the football. This drill is great to run early in the season to help find your running backs and also if one of your RBs starts to fumble the football.

The purpose of this little league football drill is to stress the importance of a good hand off and securing the football by the ball carriers. The Ball Carrier must protect the football while staying low with a good forward lean and drive with legs through bags and protect ball as ball carrier runs through the strippers keeping his eyes up to make a good cut on the bags and then speed up to beat one tackler to the goal line.
