Beast Offense Playoff Package Top 6 Plays Playoffs & Championship
Mastering the Playoff Season: The Beast Offense Playoff Package – Top 6 Plays for Championship Success
Coaches, are you geared up for the big show? If you’re heading into the playoffs or a championship game, having specialized plays ready to install as a wrinkle can be the difference-maker. The Beast Offense Playoff Package offers foundational power plays, passes and timely counters designed to exploit defenses that haven’t prepared for the sheer mass and misdirection of the Beast formation.
If you’re already familiar with the Power Wing Beast Offense (a multiple offense detailed in my 500-page Beast playbook) or are just looking for a powerful short-yardage threat, this package is designed for youth, middle school, or even high school teams. Coach Parker has been coaching the Beast Offense since 1994 and has seen tremendous success with these plays.
The Essential 3-Play Beast Package: A Quick-Install Wrinkle
For teams with limited practice time (installable within three practice periods), the first three plays are paramount. These plays are easy to teach and rely on similar blocking schemes.
1. Beast Right/Left Tank (The Power Play)
The Tank play is the core of this short-yardage package, known as the power 18/16 play. This simple, yet highly effective play has been responsible for winning many playoff games.
• Formation: Beast Tight, featuring an overloaded line of seven linemen to one side.
• Action: The run goes off the tackle. Blocking utilizes “jaw severe angle” technique, effectively walling off defenders. The Beast backs execute crucial kickouts and a trap action.
• Origin: This power concept derives from a Yale T formation, designed to get blockers closer to the point of attack, functioning similar to an “off Philly tush push play”.
• Execution: Can be run under center (called Beast under center Buc) or in shotgun; Beast.
2. Wild Weasel Wedge
The Wild Weasel Wedge is run immediately following the Tank power play. If the defense has shifted or overshifted toward the overloaded side due to the success of the Tank, the center of the LOS is often left wide open.
• Adjustment: The offense shifts to an even offensive line formation, bringing the tackles inward (“wedge tackles”) to increase mass at the point of attack.
• Goal: Hit the exposed middle area using standard wedge blocking, which is relatively simple to teach.
3. Popeye Tight End Pass
Once the defense has been successfully sucked down by the repeated power running game (Tank and Wedge), the Popeye Tight End Pass opens up.
• Strategy: This is a quick pass designed to hit the backside tight end.
• Execution: The quarterback steps back, mimicking a run look, before hitting the tight end on a short route (like an LA route, banana, or angle up). This play can be run from an unbalanced or even line formation.
These three plays—Tank Power, Wild Weasel Wedge, and Popeye Tight End Pass—are highly recommended for quick installation as a potent playoff wrinkle.
Expanding the Beast Playoff Package: The Top 6 Plays
If you have a bit more time (say, five days or two weeks) and your players are experienced enough, you can expand to the full six-play package by adding a counter, a second pass, and a sweep option.
This counter play provides essential misdirection, working well after the defense is expecting the power run. For passes and counters, the Beast Offense often utilizes an even line. The counter involves a BB split block, a kick, and a wrap before hitting the hole.
The Titans Pass is a complementary pass play, functioning as a wide drag. It requires clearing space before dragging across the field. This play targets defenders who are tightly sucked in due to the running threat.
6. Worm Sweep Option (Beast Double Wide)
The Worm sweep (Beast double wide) is arguably one of the top plays run out of the entire Beast Offense playbook.
• Option Action: This play features a sweep option, allowing the quarterback to either run the sweep or execute the Worm zipper pass.
• Pass Element: It incorporates a zipper kind of pivot route by the WB along with a deep tight end release. The design (inspired by the Patriots and a “Gronk” type player) targets the Wingback coming out with a half-fake block. If defenders are playing run, the passes open up; otherwise, the sweep is available if they are man coverage.
For coaches looking to add wrinkles, incorporating just the Wedge, the Tank power, the Pop pass, and potentially the Worm zipper for sweep action creates a devastating package.
Critical Audibles for Championship Moments
Beyond the core package, having key audibles can secure crucial yards.
• Tank Burst/Burst: An audible called if the defense stacks the line, causing the three backs to wham through and lead the way.
• Grenade or Goofy: These audibles are utilized for a quarterback sneak when specific A-gaps are left open by the defense. One memorable 99-yard touchdown scored on a Grenade in a playoff game attests to its potential for high-leverage situations.
Whether you install three plays or six, the goal is to mix up your attack, utilizing the fundamental power of the Beast Offense to surprise your opponents in elimination games.
