Beast Offense Formations Running Backs Rotation in the Beast

These are my 3 main Beast Offense Formations and the running backs rotation I use in the in Beast / Yale Single Wing Offense that I run every season for my 30 plus youth football tackle seasons since 1994.

We Rotate our RBs at the Ball Carrier Position in the Beast

I get asked or hear almost everyday; why is the QB running the football on every play. I want my other backs to get involved. Aren’t we just wasting our backs if they just block on every play.

Well, every skill player / back needs to learn how to block and also learn how to take a snap under center and in shotgun so they can rotate at the Beast Back ball carrier position. We try rotate as many running backs as we can at the Beast Back ball carrier position in a Beast Offense formations package that best uses their skill set.

Some running backs are better in traffic. Some are better sweeping and just will not run anything inside the tackles. Some backs can naturally Sweep and Pass on the run. Maybe you have a left hander that is great at running Sweep Option to the left. And maybe your QB is a Drop back passer, can run tough inside and can hand off on Counters and Reverse. Unlike what the naysayers preach about the Beat Offense, the Beast Offense is very versatile and allows all your skill players the potential opportunity to play a QB like position, preparing them for high school better than most offenses. And also forces all of your backs to learn how to block which is a base football fundamental.

There is not a QB in the Beast!!!!

Since the Beast Offense is a Single Wing variation there is not a traditional Quarterback. I consider the ball carrier a Beast Back or Wildcat back with Blocking Backs. I do not think in terms of QBs when I run the Beast Offense formations. I think about;

  • Who can run in the best Traffic
  • Who can run the best wide and Sweep
  • Who can Pass the best
  • Who can Sweep Option Pass the best
  • Who can receive a snap UC or Shotgun
  • Who can do all of the above
  • Who can block the best
  • Who can run routes & catch the best

Most Beast Offense formation plays have 4 skill players in the backfield.

  1. Beast Back / Wildcat Back – Ball Carrier
  2. Blocking Back 1 / Wingback / Receiver / TB Type
  3. Blocking Back 2 / Counter Back type
  4. Blocking Back 3 / Fullback type

You may have 2 or 3 other running backs or receivers on your team that you want to involve in the Beast Offense. Easy to make this rotation.

Beast Tight – Under Center – Scrappy HB Mac

But most youth football teams only have 1 to 3 running backs that can legitimately carry the football. But for this example I will rotate 6 skill players through the Beast Offense formation into packages for them.

I have been successful with 1 Beast Back and multiple Beast Backs in a rotation. I usually have a 3 or 4 back rotation if I can. The Beast Offense just works at the end of the day.

Example Skill Players to Rotate at Beast Back

  1. QB / FB Type – Slow Power Drop Back Passer – “Tebow”
  2. Big Fullback – Power / Wedger – “Earl”
  3. Tailback – Sweeper Super Fast / Tier 1 RB – “Dorsett”
  4. Wingback – Counter / Receiver / Semi Fast – “Cheetah”
  5. Scrappy Halfback – Hard to bring down, no fear player – “Mac”
  6. Left Handed All Around Back – Ok Arm, Pretty Fast, Smart – “Lefty”

Before I go too much farther, all of your skill players / running backs must learn how to block. Just as good as your Offensive line, which should strive to be the best in your age group / division / league. Blocking is the key to Offense not just a top tier 1 RB that sweeps all day long.

Also since the Beast Offense does not have much ball handling involved it is very simple to install and easy to execute. Get the ball from Center and run, and make sure to block for him.

Parker’s 3 Main Beast Formations with Rotation Suggestions

  • Beast Tight – Beast / Tank (slower / scrappy / power backs)
  • Beast Wide – Worm (faster / sweep option passers / Counter / power backs)
  • Beast Double Wide – Jumbo / Spread – (Super Fast / Drop Back Passer / Sweep Option backs)

Beast Tight Formation aka Beast / Tank

In the Beast Tight formation, I am looking for a running back that can run through and in traffic and not get armed tackled on the first touch. I am looking for a running back that can run the Wedge play since one of the main plays in Beast Tight is the Wedge and also Beast Tank which I consider an off-tackle type of an angled Wedge play.

Main Beast Formation - Yale Single Wing

Beast Back Rotation in Beast Tight Formation

  • Earl – FB Power
  • Tebow – FB/QB Power Passer
  • Mac – Scrappy HB hard to tackle

Each of the above could have a Beast Tight package. Adjust your blocking backs so you have the best blocking.

Beast Wide Formation or Worm

In the Beast Wide or Worm formation I am looking for Power but also a little more speed to hit the Stretch Sweep or Even a Wider Sweep Option play. You may run some counters and reverses from this formation.

Worm Beast Formation - Wide Beast

  • Tebow – FB/QB Power Passer
  • Dorsett – TB Speedster
  • Lefty – Sweep Option Passer
  • Mac – Scrappy fast HB hard to tackle

Beast Wide / Worm – Under Center – QB Tebow

Beast Spread Formation or Jumbo / Spread

The Beast Spread Jumbo formation is a great Sweep and Passing formation. We use it a ton to Spread the Defense. Spread them out then run Wedge or inside power, misdirection or just beat them to the edge. If that doesn’t work or we are just bored and want to throw then we are passing from Sweep Option plays but you can also just drop back and throw.

Top Youth Football Offense - Pirates Beast Wide Sweep
Beast Jumbo / Spread – Under Center – QB Passer

The Beast Jumbo Spread is just a Quads formation and can be Bunched to give it more passing trickiness. Almost everyone can have a Beast Jumbo Spread package. This is a great formation to use in scrimmages to see who can just be a stud running back.
