Who is Coach Grice?
Coach Grice has over twenty seasons of experience coaching football at the youth and high school levels. What do opposing Coaches say about the SSSW?
I have coached youth football for over 20 seasons. I was a Double Wing fanatic in my formative years and ran Dave Cisar’s UBSW for a season. I also have run unbalanced Beast for most of those years. I am no stranger to unbalanced lines, “proper” wedge plays and the concept of “small ball”.
I have had the misfortune of defending Troy Grice’s Sidesaddle Single Wing since 2015. The only teams in our league that manage to beat Troy are the very top teams with vastly superior talent. Troy is not always able to get the top talent in the area due to geographic limitations (his team is based in the mountains of Colorado).
The SSSW is an absolute nightmare to defend.
- If your defenders read and react to flow, they will stand flat footed until they recognize the ball. By then, it’s too late. In a 2021 scrimmage, I stood 2 yards behind my MLB. Watching Troy’s backfield action from a MLB perspective is like looking into a washing machine looking for a brown sock. Reading flow is useless.
- If you teach your players to key a particular player, the opposing coach will call a key breaker that leaves your “keying” players no less than 5 yards out of position.
- If you attack aggressively, you will get gouged for a big play.
- If you sit back, you will get ground to death by power football.
- If you blitz the secondary, you will give up a big pass play over the top.
- If you play good, sound disciplined defense, your players still must contend with a group of offensive players who know their jobs extremely well and execute it with enthusiasm. They see defenses like yours every week. Your players see offenses like theirs once a year, so you will probably lose that battle as well.

I remember the first time we had to Defend this Offense. 2016.
After watching scout film, I thought…. OK….we got this. That was 8 years ago and I still can’t fully Defend it. We see this Offense every year, sometimes twice (playoffs) . Its brutal to Defend. Brutal.
Most every year when we play Troy I have a Parent ask me…. how does that crazy Offense work? All I can tell them is…. very well. ….. it still gives me nightmares.
He is always in the top 4 of our division every year. Why? Good coaching and contrarian Systems. Every Opponent must stop everything the week before they play Troy and do some added Prep. If not you will be down 3 scores in the blink of an eye. As a long time, DC this Offense requires added attention because it is a Base Buster.
