I read an article the other day about a High School team that has decided not to Punt on Special Teams. Based on their stats, they conclude that they have a better opportunity to make a first down vs the gains made by punting. Since I coach youth football pre-teens, this seems like a pretty good idea, especially since punting at this age group is very risky; snap, blocking, kick / punt, and return coverage.

Based on our Punt stats from our last season, not punting might be a good option for us. We only netted about 10 yards from our punt team. Our net yards per play were 5+ for the regular season. I sent the Punting article to my other coaches, and they agree. Not punting is a legitimate strategy for our team.

I’ve been strategizing if not punting within the 10 makes sense. Should you take the safety and kick-off or should you go for it and hope your defense can hold within the 10 if you do not make the 1st down? I am thinking that within the 5 and 5+ yards to go maybe we take the safety. We are consistent making two point conversions so we could make up the difference for a saftey. If we are outside the 5 and less then 7+ to go we should go for it on 4th down. Within the 10 is my only sticking point with not punting for an entire game.

Let me know if you would punt inside the 10 or go for it. Or would you always punt on 4th down no matter where you are on the field?

Play for Fun and Winning is Funner.

Last night, I read American Football Coaches Association’s Complete Guide to Special Teams. This is an excellent 250 page book on Special Teams tactics, drills and techniques written by some of the best Special Teams coaches in football and edited by Coach Bill Mallory and Coach Don Nehlen. Some of the tactics outlined in the book are too sophisticated for youth football but the fundamental strategies lay an excellent special teams’ foundation for any youth tackle football team and the position technique chapters apply to all football players that want to play skill positions on Special Teams. I could not put the book down and read all 250 pages in one sitting. I rate the book 4.5 /5.0.

The book is divided into two parts; tactics and techniques. The Tactics sections includes chapters on; Punting, Kickoffs, Punt Returns, Kickoff Returns, Extra Points and Field Goals, Two-Point Conversions, Punt and Field Goal Blocks, and Developing Special Team Units. The Techniques section includes chapters on; Punting, Kicking Off, Kicking Extra Points and Field Goals, Long Snapping, Holding for Kicks, Returning Punts and Kickoffs, and Developing Special Team Players.

There is so much good information in this book. I made highlight marks on just about every page and I normally do not make hand written notes inside my books, but I did in this book. It is that good. I especially like the technique chapters on Punting, Long Snapping and Kicking. You can buy the Complete Guide to Special Teams book at my Amazon Football book store here.

Good luck this season. Play for Fun and Winning is Funner!

In 2006 when I started coaching tackle youth football again, the leagues coaching coordinator was very big on kicking onside kicks. That was his thing. To be honest, onside kicking every kick did not work out for us. Sure we picked a few turnovers, but the majority of time we gave the other team 7 to 12 yards on our kick off.

In 2007 we started kicking just over the head of the 1st line of the kick return team and try to have the ball bounce before the second line of returners. This short kick off worked better for us. We recovered about the same number of kicks and most of the time, the returner at the second line just fell on the ball. We would pick up about 7 yards a kick vs our old onside kick. I cringed a few times when our kicker kicked the ball a little hard and it drifted into the “real” returners hands.

This year, I am going to continue with the short kick focused on the second line of returners. What have you had success with on youth football kickoffs?

Good Luck this season. Play for Fun and Winning is Funner!

The other day, I was talking to another youth tackle football coach about how his 4th grade youth football team blocks on kick returns. We did not do a great job blocking on kick returns last year, and I want to see how other coaches are blocking kick off defenders. He says he makes sure the kick is not an on-side kick then he has his blockers angle inward, shuffle step backward and then pick up a man nearest him. The blocker shuffles with his block, mirroring the defender downfield and punch blocking him. He does not have his kick return blockers “engage” the defender but mirror and punch block the defender while running with the defender. So he basically has his blockers “get in the way” of the defenders. He says that his experience has been when the youth football player “engages” the defender, the kick return blockers stop their feet and the defender runs past them.

I do like the “basketball like” mirror blocking concept. I am going to experiment with this concept this season, but I will assign my kick return blockers defenders to block. I think this will especially work well for my front line blockers, since I am now moving to an all skill player kick return team. For my second line of blockers, I am going to experiement with Coach Cisar’s Trap blocking concepts outlined in his Winning Youth Football A Step by Step book.

Please reply to this post and let me know what you are doing for your kick return blocking.

Good luck this season.

After reading Coaching Offensive Linemen by Dave Christensen and James Peterson, I learned something that I have never heard before about Kick Return front linemen, except maybe for the Hands Kick Return Team for onside kicks. They suggest in their book that your offensive linemen do not make good kick return blockers because the are not designed to be open field blockers. They recommend using linebackers, tight ends, and back-up running backs as your Kick Return Teams front-line blockers.

Why use skill players as the frontline blockers of your Kick Return Team?

Better Open Field Blockers

Better use of hands for blocking and recovering ball

Quicker and Faster to set up your blocking line

Allows time during kick to talk to O-Line as a group before 1st play

After thinking about this for a week, they may be right, especially in youth football leagues. I will be adjusting my kick return front line based on the above. It makes sense. If you decide to stick with your o-line as your kick return teams front line blockers, here are a few rules to use.

Rules for Lineman on the Kick Return Team:

Never chase the football more than 2 steps

Never try to catch the football over your head

Never catch the ball and then run with it

If you recover the kick, cradle the football with your body

Physically cover-up your team mate with the ball

If the ball is deliberately kick hard at you, don’t touch it, let it continue downfield to the backs

Good Luck this season.

Close games are won by field position and the kicking game. On a Kick Off you can influence the field position by a great kick and coverage or recovering a fumble. I particularly like the latter. The key to special teams and the kick off is practice, practice, and more practice of special teams. The most successful special team units spend a lot of time practicing and so should your team if you want to win the close game.

The Kick Off is a huge opportunity to influence the outcome of the game. You’re going to kick off at least once in the game and you have the opportunity to swing the momentum to your team by a great play from your kick off team.

In an 2/08 article in American Football Monthly, Charlie Parker of the University of Pittsburgh, outlines his 7 Essentials to Kick Off Coverage.

Get off the ball

Eye on the target

Over the top to the target

Feet gain ground up field

Hands on blocker of fit the wedge

Keep feet gaining ground

Make the tackle

The main point in the article is to get up-field quickly and make the tackle. Don’t mess around with the blockers; push up field as fast as possible. In the article Parker refers to a few drills; The Rabbit Drill, The Over the Top Drill and The Cross Field Drill.

In youth football, the players worry about the blockers and don’t blow past them. The Over the Top Drill is good for teaching the players to avoid the blocker and get up field to the ball carrier. You line up a blocker, returner and a cover man. The cover man and blocker are five yards apart and returner is 20 yards back. The cover man tries to avoid the blocker while keeping his eyes on the the returner, while gaining ground to tag the returner.

Hope this helps your special teams’ practice. Good luck this season.

Special Teams is a game breaker in youth football. Most pee wee teams do not practice Special Teams the needed amount of time, and they pay the consequences in the game. Plus, a lot of youth teams, place a high number of minimum play players (MPPs) on their Special Team units. Not enough practice time and MPPs usually leads to disaster.

Our pee wee team has a dedicated Special Teams Coach, and we spend at least 45 minutes a week out of 6 hours of practice on coordinated Special Teams practice. This year, I am turning our warm-ups and end-of-practice conditioning time into Special Team drills to get 30 minutes more of Special Teams practice a week. We also ask our skills players, kickers, punters and returners, to practice at home. I wish we had more time, because this is still not enough.

We have been very lucky with our Special Teams play, but I still cringe when we punt the ball. I think the punt is the most dangerous play in youth football. We only punt if we are backed up within our 25 on a 60 yard field. There are so many variables in the punt starting with the snap. You must find an accurate long snapper and practice the long snap everyday. A bad snap can add 7+ more yards of negative field postion to an already difficult defensive situation. Punters are also very inconsistent at the pee wee level. The receiving of the snap is tough and then to punt with 7+ players running at you takes a unique personality to stay calm and not miss the snap or shank the punt. We ask the punters to kick out of bounds toward our special teams’ coach. I do not want the possibility of a return, because the punt return in youth football is a great play for the return team, especially if the team has a top running back. Open field tackling at the youth level is very poor and a good punt returner on the loose is a chance for a big gainer or even a TD. So never kick down the middle of the field to the punt returner.

I am also worried about Kick-offs, especially, if we have not called an on-side kick. Like the punt, a good returner can mess up your day. I never kick deep. I usally kick to the second line of receivers and try to kick to an MPP. We kick the ball on the ground so there is a possibility of a weird bounce and fumble by the receiving team. Never kick to a starting running back that is also on the kick return team. Pick out the player that is having trouble where to line-up or is not paying attention. John T Reed says in his book, Coaching Youth Football, to kick to your sidelines, because it is hard for the players across the field to hear their coaches and usually have uneven spacing allowing for a great on-side kick opportunity. Kicking short also reduces your chances for a big return. Most of the time, the receiving team falls on our squib kicks. You must train your kickers to identify these keys and be consistent. If your kicker can not kick to the second line on the ground and kicks high and deep, you must find another kicker.

We have been very successful with our kick-returns. We have four talented returners, all starting running backs. We spread these returners around the kick return unit based on the opposing kickers kicking habits. We put one of our starting FBs on the front line because he looks like a lineman, one of our halfbacks on the second line, another FB offset behind the 2nd line and our speed demon deep offset from the deep FB. We then move them around these lines based on the kicker. We score a TD on a return about every other game. The kick return blockers have assigned players to block. We have tried to set wedges and walls but this has not been as successful as assigned blocks.

Our punt return unit is a punt block unit. We assign a punt returner and ask him to return the punt if he is unopposed. We stack the line adnd try for a blocked punt. We tell everyone on the team, except for the returner, not to touch the punt once it has crossed the line of scrimmage.

A big advantage to any youth football team is a PAT kicker. We found our PAT kicker last year and he was very successful, about 40%. Because the PAT Kick is 2 points in our league this is a huge advantage. My advice to any youth team is to start working on this skill early. We waited one year too late. Like the punt, practice the long snap and make sure you have a hands player holding. Our holder is our speed demon back because he can pass and runs well in a crowd if the snap is muffed.

Practice, Practice, Practice Special Teams! Good luck.
