I received my December American Football Monthly magazine just the other day and I must agree with the cover story, “The Tackling Crisis: Why Proper Tackling Has Deteriorated,” that tackling at all levels of football is terrible. According to AFM research 78% of surveyed coaches believe tackling has gotten worse over the last decade. I hate watching NFL cornerbacks launch themselves at a running backs to make a big hit and not wrapping up on the hit, or they could have just pushed the back out of bounds. Most of the time, the great running backs bounce off the hit and score. I also agree with the article that some adjustments need to be made on how we coach form tackling. With today’s wide open spread offenses the perfect form tackle that has been taught over the years may be one cause of the tackling crisis. Subscribe to AFM and read the full story.

Take Our Poll

Here are some other interesting articles in the November and December American Football Monthly.

Top Football Articles – November 2008 Issue of American Football Monthly

10 Offensive Strategies You Must Implement Today

550 Yards Per Game: The Shotgun I

The University of Wisconsin Whitewater Three Step Naked Package

Pressuring the Offense with Effective Front Eight Movement

Cal’s 3 Deep Zone Coverage vs The 4-Vertical Passing Game

Halftime Adjustments

Top Football Articles – December 2008 Issue of American Football Monthly

The Tackling Crisis: Why Proper Tackling Has Deteriorated

The Tackling Survey: Understanding the Problem

The Tackling Solution: What you must do to Improve Tackling in Your Program

Nose Guard: Establishing an Effective Two-Gap

Red’s Wing Offense: Giving Small Players the Chance for Big Results

Special Teams Time Management

The Sling T Wham Series

In the November Issue of AFM, the Charlie Stubbs interview in the “10 Offensive Strategies You Must Implement today,” is a great article. My favorite of the 10, “Develop flexible schemes that can adapt to players available.” What can this team do best, not last year’s.

If you’re a football coach and not reading American Football Monthly, you’re missing out on some of the best football coaching strategies in print and video. Subscribe to AFM today.

I received my American Football Monthly June 2008 issue the other day. The cover article is The Anatomy of Blocking Kicks. A few of the other articles are Zone Blitzing The Spread Offense, Stifling the Screen Pass, Simplifying the Zone Blitz, Keep the Defense off Balance by Formation and Tempo and The Wildcat Spin; The Two Minute Offense. Since I run a version of the SPIN offense, I especially liked the article on the Wildcat Spin. Another interesting article of this month’s magazine was the editor’s letter reviewing trends in football. The biggest trends right now on offense are spreading the defense and getting best players the ball in open space, and no huddle and quick counts to speed up the tempo of the game.

Subscribe to American Football Monthly . Good luck this season!

I just received the May 2008 issue of American Football Monthly. Now that I am married and pushing 50, its like getting the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue every month. Well, maybe not.

Mike Kuchar’sarticle on Developing Deception with the Spread Option is also a very good article. I run a Toss / Spin offense variation and this article had some gems for me to use in my 5th grade offense. I liked his Counter Option play, especially the motion used and the Counter ISO play. I tried to run this play last year, but I kept trying to go wide to the D gap, and not to the C gap. I drew this up two weeks ago when I was updating my playbook, so I am very happy he has used it with success.

And lastly, I enjoyed another Spin Offense update by Dale Weiner, Spin Offense Passing Game Adjustments. We had a tough time last year as a 4th grade team passing. I think we completed about 5% of our passes. The prior season as a 3rd grade team, we averaged almost 3 out of 5 receptions a game and scored on many. So we were pretty disappointedwith our passing game last season. This season we want to pass out of the Spin formation and use Screens, Short Quick one step drop passes by QB and and a Half back option pass on a Fly route. I think all of these come down to good Pass blocking, deception and good quick drop steps by our QB.

There’s also a discounted subscription offer for AFM subscribers from GridIron Strategies and a complimentary copy of thier April /May 2008 issue. The issue is only about 20 pages but its all meat except for the two page AFM video ad spread. I think the ”What Ifs” sections of the articles adds a great quasi interaction by the reader to the static magazine page. So you really get some good info. I would recommend 4 of the 9 articles, and enjoyed the rest. So, I’ll probably subscribe for the 6 issues at $26.
